Soon after the news of Nido Tania's death splashed in media, another incident of assault on people of North East came to light. News of two Manipuri women, who were molested and beaten by shopkeepers in full public view was revealed on January 29.
Seven days after the incident, police on facing flak for the delay in registering a case and inaction, on Sunday arrested Prem Chand, 32, from Kotla Mubarakpur area. Chand has been booked under sections of SC/ST Act, in addition to several other sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the case following a supplementary statement by the victims' male friend that was filed after four days.
The incident took place at around 9.30 PM in Kotla Mubarakpur area. One of the victims, who works in a shopping mall, went to buy some Manipuri herbs from a shop owned by her acquaintance from the North East.
At the same time a youth came down the path with a pet dog, whose leash entangled with the woman's shoe heels. In panic the woman started kicking the dog. The dog fled and the youth started an argument with the Manipuri woman. Her friend, the shop owner, tried to intervene.
Meanwhile, the dog's owner Prem Chand, came to the spot and the argument turned violent. Chand along with some locals started beating the two Manipuri women. The women were not only beaten but also molested. The incident happened in full public view, but none of the locals intervened. Also, when they wanted to lodge an FIR at the police station, the policemen were reluctant to register the case.
A case on the assault was registered only after intervention by leaders of some Northeast outfits the next day.
